Growing up on the north shore of Oahu, I was raised a little different from the rest of the world. For as long as I can remember, my life has always revolved around the ocean whether it’s fishing, surfing or diving. Like most kids here in Hawaii, it’s a dream to one day become a world renowned professional surfer and that’s exactly what I dedicated my childhood to accomplishing. Eventually I became a pro surfer, however, what a lot of people don’t know is from the time I could walk I was on the mat training jiu-jitsu.
My father who moved to Hawaii from Brazil in the late 80s came from a family of martial artists. From a young age, he implemented the principles and values in my life. My schedule growing up consisted of school, surf, homework, train, sleep. He did everything to support my surfing career and honestly didn’t want me to become a fighter at first.
Fast forward a few years, I got tired of the competitive surfing scene with a preference toward free surfing. It was always a dream of mine to fight and when I turned 17, I moved to California to train full time at Blackhouse MMA. Some of the best fighters walked through that door, like Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida.
My dad would say “If you want to be a fighter, prove it and go train like one”. From that point on I found what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Now being in my early 20’s and fighting for some of the highest level promotions we have in the sport of MMA, I figured why not share a bit of what I have learned with my community.
I built this gym with the intention of teaching what martial arts has taught me from a young age; respect, courage, leadership, discipline, confidence, and focus along with physical and mental fitness. Join us for group and private training sessions for both jiu-jitsu and kickboxing. We look forward to seeing you in class ready to work!
